12:00AM 12:00AM Dorothy Boccella’s 2013 Holiday Marketplace fund The Abington Community Library will host its Dorothy Boccella’s 2013 Holiday Marketplace fundraiser on Saturday, November 9, 2013 from 10 AM to 4 PM. The library is located at 1200 West Grove Street, Clarks Summit. Admission is FREE. This annual fundraiser will feature over 25 local vendors with unique handcrafted items including honey and maple syrup products, handmade wooden bowls and cutting boards, pottery, clothing, funky and traditional jewelry, and original artwork. Through November 9 a chance raffle is available with over 80 beautiful baskets donated by local businesses and individuals. Baskets include gift cards, jewelry, child’s wooden rocking chair, an overnight stay with spa treatments, American Girl Doll, LEGO Medieval Castle set, and much more! Raffle tickets can be purchased at the library. The ticket prices are 2 tickets for $1, 12 tickets for $5, or 25 tickets for $10. The tickets can be used towards any basket. The concept for Holiday Marketplace (2009) was created by former Library staff member Dorothy Boccella (1960-2013), a talented woman whose infectious enthusiasm, generosity, and creativity made this event and its success possible. 8:30AM 2:00PM Friends of Abington Community Library Book Sale Friends of the Abington Community Library will host their annual Fall Book Sale on Saturday, October 12, 2013, from 8:30 A.M. to 2:00 P.M., at the Clarks Summit United Methodist Church located at the corner of West Grove Street and the Morgan Highway. This annual event features thousands of print and electronic selections for all ages at affordable prices. Find your next book while supporting your local library! 2:00PM 5:00PM Rember Johnny Mitchell Day On Sunday, October 27 2013, the Pennsylvania Anthracite Heritage Museum will host Remember Jonny Mitchell Day, commemorating the legendary United Mine Workers President and the miners who revered him. As one of the most beloved heroes in Anthracite and labor history, John Mitchell's success in uniting miners of all ethnic backgrounds to strike in 1902 for better wages and working conditions launched a major reform in miners' lives throughout the local region. His leadership was unparalleled in the Great American Coal Strike.
All Day Turkey Bingo The Annual Turkey Bingo sponsored by the Christian Women of Our Lady of Hope Parish, 40 Park Ave., Wilkes Barre will be held on Sunday, Oct. 13, at the Marymount Parish Center, 154 So. Hancock St. Doors open at 12:30pm. Early Bird is 2:00pm, Admission is $2.00. A raffle will also be held for several great prizes, including a hand made quilt, and 3 hand made afgans. Raffke tickets and refreshments can be purchased at the bingo.
6:00PM 11:00PM Bonfire at The Iron Furnaces The 3rd annual festival celebrates autumn and the local culture with live music, theater, dance, cultural exhibits, a Jack O'Lantern carving completion, fire twirlers, a drum circle and the ceremonial lighting of the bonfire. Food will be available through a variety of vendors, including nationally acclaimed "What the FORK Truck, Muncheese, LLC and Jessee's Place! Drinks will be served, including beer, wine, hot cider and soft drinks. Advanced tickets are $15 and cab be purchased by visiting www.scrantonbonfire.com or by calling the Anthracite Heritage Museum at 570-963-4804 prior to Saturday, October 19th. Tickets purchased at the event are $20. Children under 12 are free. Major sponsors of the Bonfire include the Lackawanna Heritage Valley National and State Heritage area, Entercom, The Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and Penn Foster.
